Do Nail Enhancements Ruin Your Nails? Myth or Fact?

If you've ever hesitated to book a nail appointment because someone told you, “nail enhancements ruin your natural nails,” we’re here to set the record straight.

At Bliss Beauty + Wellness in Timmins, we believe in educating our clients so they can make confident, informed decisions about their self-care. And when it comes to nail enhancements like gel, acrylic, or builder gel, there’s a lot of misinformation floating around.

So—do nail enhancements actually damage your nails? Let’s unpack this myth.

✅ The Truth: Enhancements Don’t Ruin Your Nails—Improper Technique Does

The biggest misconception is that nail enhancements inherently harm or “suffocate” your natural nails. That’s simply not true—if applied and maintained properly by a trained professional using the correct tools and techniques.

🧬 Understanding Nail Anatomy

Before diving deeper, let’s talk science.

  • Your natural nail is made of compact keratin, a protein similar to your hair.

  • Nails are biologically dead tissue once they grow beyond the cuticle.

  • The part of your body that determines nail growth, health, and thickness is called the nail matrix—located beneath the skin at the base of the nail, under the cuticle.

  • Since nails are not living tissue, they don’t breathe, absorb oxygen, or “rest.”

👉 Myth busted: You don’t need to “let your nails breathe.” Giving your nails a break is a personal choice—not a biological necessity.

How Nail Enhancements Work (The Right Way)

We gently prepare the surface of your natural nail before applying any product. This prep is critical and, when done properly, is perfectly safe.

  • We lightly etch the surface using a fine E-file bit or buffer—not enough to thin or damage the nail plate.

  • Natural nail oils are removed with a dehydrator to ensure proper adhesion of the product (just like prepping a canvas before painting).

  • Once enhancements grow out, we remove the bulk of the product safely using a file or E-file, then 'backfill' (apply new product at the base) so you can continue wearing your enhancements without starting from scratch.

🧡 No over-filing. No rushing. No shortcuts.

What Can Damage Natural Nails?

Damage doesn’t come from the enhancements themselves—it comes from:

  • Improper prep (over-filing, incorrect bits, skipping dehydration)

  • Peeling or picking off the product at home (ouch!)

  • Incorrect removal (especially using acetone soaks too frequently or not filing first)

  • Aggressive at-home trimming or filing

  • Skipping cuticle care, which protects the matrix

  • DIY jobs without training or proper hygiene

Nail Health Depends on More Than Just Your Manicure

Did you know that medications, stress, diet, and lifestyle can all affect your natural nails?

Even when you’re doing everything right with enhancements, factors like hormone imbalances, vitamin deficiencies, or chronic stress can lead to peeling, thinness, or brittleness. Your nails are often a reflection of what’s going on inside your body—so healthy habits matter too.

Should You Take a Break From Enhancements?

That’s entirely up to you. If you enjoy the look and strength of nail enhancements and they’re professionally maintained—you don’t need a break.

But if you want to switch it up, try:

  • A builder gel overlay for a more natural look with strength

  • A nourishing cuticle treatment

  • Gel-x system (soak off nail enhancements)

  • A professional manicure with a strengthening base coat and regular oiling
