What to expect, how to prep, and how to choose the right bikini wax for you

If you’re considering your first Brazilian wax, you’re not alone—and you’re in good hands. Whether you're prepping for a beach vacation, want to simplify your self-care routine, or are just curious about the experience, a Brazilian wax can be empowering, hygienic, and easier than you might expect.
We offer a variety of waxing options—from basic bikini to full Brazilian—and use a combination of hard and soft waxes to ensure comfort and effectiveness for everybody.
Here’s everything you need to know to prep for your first visit.
What Exactly Is a Brazilian Wax?
Let’s start by breaking down the different bikini wax options so you can choose what feels best for you:
Wax Type | What It Includes |
Bikini Wax | Removes hair from the sides of your bikini line only |
Deep Bikini | Removes more from the top and sides; still leaves a modest triangle or strip |
Moderate Brazilian | Removes most hair front and back but leaves a small patch or strip |
Full Brazilian | Removes all hair from the front, labia, and between the cheeks (fully bare) |
👉 Pro tip: You can always start with a bikini or deep bikini and work your way up as you feel more comfortable.
Before Your Appointment: How to Prep
Proper prep helps reduce discomfort, avoid irritation, and make your waxing appointment more efficient.
Let It Grow
Your hair should be at least ¼ inch long (about the length of a grain of rice) so the wax can grip effectively. If it's too short, it may not come out fully.
Skip Harsh Products
At least 5–7 days before your appointment, avoid:
Retinol or exfoliating acids on the bikini area
Chemical peels or laser treatments
Accutane or other medications that thin the skin
3. Gently Exfoliate 1–2 Days Before
Use a soft scrub or exfoliating mitt 48 hours before to remove dead skin cells. This helps reduce ingrown hairs and improves wax adhesion. Avoid exfoliating on the same day of your appointment.
Wear Loose Clothing
Comfort is key. Soft, loose-fitting underwear or breathable pants will help reduce friction afterward.
Take a Pain Reliever (Optional)
Some people take ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before their appointment to reduce discomfort and inflammation. Totally optional, but can help first-timers.
What to Expect During Your Brazilian Wax
✔ We Use Both Hard & Soft Wax
At Bliss, we use soft wax for larger areas and hard wax for more sensitive zones like the labia and between the cheeks. Hard wax adheres to the hair—not the skin—making it ideal for a gentler experience.
✔ It’s Okay to Feel Nervous
It’s normal to feel vulnerable at your first appointment. Our trained estheticians are professional, respectful, and here to support you. We’ll walk you through each step and guide you on positioning.
✔ How Long Does It Take?
Most Brazilian waxes take 20–30 minutes. It’s quick, efficient, and customized to your comfort level.
✔ How Much Does It Hurt?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but the good news is that the discomfort is very brief. Most clients say it’s far more tolerable than they expected—and gets easier with each session.
Aftercare: What to Avoid & How to Soothe
🚫 For the first 24–48 hours, avoid:
Hot baths, steam rooms, or intense sweating
Tanning or sun exposure
Exfoliating products or tight clothing
Intimacy (give the skin time to heal)
✅ Do:
Apply a soothing aloe or post-wax balm to calm any redness
Wear cotton underwear to reduce irritation
Begin gentle exfoliation 3 days post-wax to help prevent ingrowns
How Often Should You Wax?
We recommend booking a Brazilian every 4–6 weeks. With consistent waxing, hair grows back finer, softer, and less frequently, making future appointments easier and more comfortable.
